Ponche--essentially a fruit tea--is on every table from Christmas through New Years. Warm, sweet, and even better with a drop of whiskey, ponche is perfect for a winter night and super easy to make with any and all of your favorite fruits!
General ingredients for 1 gallon of ponche:
-1 gallon of water
-1 large cinnamon stick
-1 cup of sugar, plus more to taste
-2 kilos of fruit (see below)
Directions:
-In a large pot over high heat, combine all ingredients except the sugar and boil for an hour*. After an hour, add sugar and serve!
*Certain fruits, like coconut and papaya, take more or less time. Read below for specific boiling times.
Delicious fruits for ponche; choose your own adventure! :
-Apples, peeled, cored, and diced
-Diced pineapple
-Sugar cane, cut into inch-long strips
-Guyabas (white guavas), quartered
-Coconut, diced (boil in water 2 hours before following directions above)
-Tejocotes (crab apples), whole
-Papaya, diced (add in 10 minutes before serving)
-Pear, peeled, cored, and diced
-Orange, sliced
ANY OTHER FRUIT YOU LOVE!
Serve and enjoy with a bit of whiskey or tequila if desired :)
